Personal:
We live in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking LA downtown, with my wife, son and a German Shepherd Dog. In my spare time I love camping, hiking, running, adventure motorcycle riding, Burningman, coding to the soundtrack of Above & Beyond, working on my book, and for shits and giggles getting owned by my son in online games!
Professional:
I’m CEO and co-founder of a California based corporation, Voxel Tech Inc., which contracts for technology companies, primarily in the movie and aerospace industry. As such, I’m currently contracting for both SpaceX (computational scientist) and Weta Digital (Head of Simulation R&D). Until May of 2017 I was director of R&D and Sr. Principal Engineer at DreamWorks Animation. Since April 2014 I’ve been a member of the Propulsion group at SpaceX which is tasked with large scale fluid dynamics simulations of the new Raptor rocket engine powering the main stage of the BFR for human settlements on Mars. Prior to joining DreamWorks Animation in early 2009, I worked at Digital Domain for three years, was a full tenured professor in computer graphics at Linkoping University for four years, and was a visiting faculty member and research scientist at Caltech for five years. During this period I was also an adjunct professor at Aarhus University for five years and worked at NASA's JPL on trajectory design for the “Genesis” space mission for almost two years. I hold a Ph.D. in Quantum Mechanical studies of chemical reactions from the University of Copenhagen, and in 2015 I received an Academy Award for the development of OpenVDB, which has become an industry standard for efficient representations of volumetric visual effects like fire, explosions, smoke, water etc. I’m currently on the SIGGRAPH 2019 Technical Paper Committee, Chair of the Technical Steering Committee (TSC) of OpenVDB and a voting member of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF).
